Our Organisation
MICROFINANCE INITIATIVE FOR WEST AFRICA (MIWA) is an organization limited by guarantee (LBG), registered with the Registrar-General’s Department of Ghana, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, and the Non-Profit Organization Secretariat of the Department of Social Welfare – Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. Ghana’s 2020 Non-Profit Organization (NPO) Policy recognises the NPO as a civil society organization formed for the public benefit. They perform complementary and beneficial role to the various spheres of national and community development aimed at socio-economic and and political development. Situating the Policy within the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the fundamental freedoms to Ghanaian citizens to engage in peaceful activities aimed at humanitarian response, long term development and public policy advocacy through civic organizations is guaranteed. These rights and duties are derived from Article 21(1)(a-e) of Chapters 5 and Article 37 (1), (2) (a)(b), and (3) of Chapters 6 of the Constitution. Also, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (ACHPR) Guidelines on Freedom of Peaceful Association and Assembly adopted in May 2017, establishes legislative protection of the Rights and Freedoms of Association and Assembly (FoAA) in Africa.
